Katie was abandoned by her mother when she was nine.  To make matters worse, her father marries a woman only nine years older than Kate who resents and mistreats her when her father is away.

Kevin and Wren live with their grandparents because their parents are incapable of taking care of them properly.  There father is institutionalized and their mother lives in Atlanta.

Jessie’s parents are separated and a divorce seems imminent.  Jessie’s in a downward, negative spiral which will not change until she is able to accept the divorce situation for what it is.

Guest, Elissa Haden.  OVER THE MOON.
Kate Baker's parents were killed in an accident when she was 8.  Aunt Georgia has raised Kate, Jay, and Mattie, but Mattie moved out 4 years ago and Kate, now 16, is confronting the death of her parents and related family issues.

Hinton, S. E.  TEX.
Tex is 15.  His father is away more than at home, his mother died when he was little.  Tex believes his dad is working hard at the rodeo and doesn't really mean to stay away so long without sending money home.  But Mace, Tex's older brother who is raising Tex, knows better.  The hardest thing for Tex is learning his father's secret and learning to appreciate Mace's love and concern for him.

Charles asks Justin, a community recluse whose face had been severely burned, to tutor him to pass a rigorous entrance exam.  Charles learns to appreciate hard work and, more importantly, learns about friendship and love as he and Justin tear down emotional walls each had built around himself.

Howe, Norma.  GOD, THE UNIVERSE, AND HOT FUDGE SUNDAES.
16-year-old Alfie Newton has just experienced the death of her younger sister who died of a congenital muscle disease which affected her all of her life.  Following her sister's death and parents' divorce, Alfie is forced to come to terms with her own attitudes about death, religion, and love.

Hunt, Irene.  UP A ROAD SLOWLY.
After his mother's death, 7-year-old Julie Trelling chooses to live with her Aunt Cordclia instead of her father and his new wife.  This novel traces Julie's development through her 18th birthday.

In three years, Delia’s father has died, and mother has remarried.  She decides to go to the Canadian lake and the island her father willed to her, but not all turns out as she has planned.

Eugene is able to survive a summer of dealing with his mother’s first romantic interest since his parents’ divorce, a need to reestablish a relationship with his estranged father, and his first love.
