Congratulations to Sandy Young, a Para at high school.  April's G.E.M. Award Recipient

Sandy is an unsung hero of WHS. I go to her for advice on how to handle situations almost every time she is in my room. Her patience and caring for all students is seen by her sitting by students and working quietly with them to make sure they have the support needed. Often times it is difficult to figure out who she is in the room for because she checks on all students. Sandy Young wholeheartedly Goes the Extra Mile!

Sandy is the ultimate professional.  She is always patient and kind even with the most challenging of students or circumstances. Sandy has a great sense of humor and is able to see the humor in ordinary situations. Sandy and I have worked together so often that we understand each other.  I will begin a lesson or activity and she knows exactly where we are going, how to support students and where they may struggle.  Often, she is there to help before I even know I need it!  She knows the difference between helping and over-helping and allows the students to shine!

Sandy has been an exceptional para educator at Wamego High School for over 24 years. In a position that we struggle to find applicants and where we see a lot of turnover, Sandy has not only been loyal to USD #320- she has excelled as one of the best in her position. Sandy is a quiet leader who has a gift of working with students. She excels in every job asked of her. She enjoys working with students in the high needs classroom and helps take care of their basic needs including feeding, changing and whatever is asked of her and she always does her tasks with love. Sandy also enjoys serving students in inclusive classrooms and is knowledgeable in all subject areas. Above all else- she knows how to work with all students- including the most difficult. Her kind, motherly demeanor expects the most from students and gets it from them. Sandy is so effective yet chooses to remain behind the scenes, never asking for recognition. Her selflessness is witnessed daily both at school and at her home where she is also a caretaker. When life throws her difficult situations she never complains nor does she let it affect her quality of work. She is truly one of the best at what she does and extremely deserving of this award.

Sandy treats all kids with dignity and respect. She is so professional. She breathes life into all of us! Her kindness and joy are so contagious and amazing. From doing advanced math with kids, to helping my kids learn how to stir... or feeding a student... I just love her! She has taught me so much!

Sandy is one of the best paras I have ever worked with. She is willing to help however she is needed whether it is coming in early to help get students off the bus or if it is over the lunch hour or after school. She holds students accountable and not only makes sure they are completing their work- she makes sure they are learning the material. She is a fantastic teacher and so knowledgeable she can help in every subject. We are so fortunate to have her!
