Free Screening for Preschoolers, Infants and Toddlers

A free screening clinic to assess the school readiness of pre-school age children is scheduled for Friday, January 23rd 2009 and will be held at the Peace United Church of Christ in Alma, 4th and Grand.  The Special Services Cooperative, the Wabaunsee County Health Department and the local Infant-Toddler Program sponsor the screening.  The screening is open to all preschool aged children (birth to five) living in the following districts:  USD 320 Wamego; USD 323 Rock Creek and USD 329 Mill Creek Valley.

Each child will be tested in six areas:  concepts, hearing, vision, language, motor skills and social skills.  Certified and licensed Coop staff and Infant-Toddler staff participate in the screening.

Special Education preschool classes are located at Alma, St. George, Westmoreland and Wamego Elementary Schools.  Pre-school classrooms are designed for children age three to five who have speech/language and other developmental delays.  Infant/Toddler services are available to infants and toddlers from birth to age 3.  Infant/Toddler services are home-based.

Screening takes approximately one hour.  For those children whom there may be concerns identified at the screening, the team may recommend further evaluation, which is also free.   For a screening appointment please call  the Special Services Cooperative office at (785) 456-9195.  While walk-ins are welcome, it is best to make an appointment so sufficient staff/equipment will be available.
