Hi, my name is Tina Callender and I teach physical education (PE) at West Elementary. This is my 15th year of teaching at West Elementary. I have been teaching for more than 25 years. I love my job because I enjoy teaching children of all ages and seeing them learn new skills and being filled with excitement of being physically active.
I earned a Bachelor’s degree at Fort Hays State University and a Master’s degree from Kansas State University. Previously, I’ve taught middle school science, human sexuality, health, physical education, religion, K-5 physical education, swimming and diving lessons. I’ve also been a first aid and CPR instructor, recreation activity coordinator, lifeguard, and gymnastics instructor. In addition, I’ve been trained as an EMT and a nurse’s aide.
CLASS TIMES & ACTIVITIES
Students come to physical education three times a week for a total of 100 minutes. We do a wide variety of activities. We put most of our focus on fitness and skill building. The students participate in the Presidential Fitness Challenge, and have a Super Kids Play Day in May.
CLASS GOALS
It is my hope that by participating in physical education students will respect themselves and others, as well as the equipment and the learning environment. Students will develop, demonstrate and understand fundamental movement skills and health related fitness components. Students will learn a wide variety of cognitive and physical skills to create and problem solve. More importantly, it is my hope that they use and enjoy physical activity and that they develop healthy habits outside of the classroom.
