Wamego High School HELP Room

Help is an acronym that stands for Here to Encourage the Learning Process.  The program was developed in 1988 by Dr. Richard Dole and implemented by Mrs. Beverly Schottler for the purpose of meeting the needs of academically at-risk students.  Mrs. Carol Wyatt is the current HELP room teacher.  The purpose of HELP is to give academic support to low achieving students and provide specific interventions for those students who are having difficulty in succeeding in core classes such as science, social studies, English, and math.  The goal of the HELP room is to equip students with the skills they need to be successful on their own in the regular classroom and to create a positive and supportive atmosphere and environment for them to work in while they are in HELP.

Student identification and placement into the HELP program is voluntary and never forced.  Students, parents, and teachers may request that a student be considered for placement into the HELP program.  The program is also open to students who wish to use in on a walk-in basis for help with special projects or homework.

The classroom activity is structured and follows a set routine each day.  During the fall semester, the students work through a study skills unit.  In the spring, a career unit is taught and culminates in a career related field trip designed to spark the students’ interest in a specific career field.

The success of the HELP program is a team effort.  The administration, teachers, Peer Tutors, and the students all work together and support each other.  This team effort is what makes the program a success.
