Post-Secondary Planning & Training
Guidance staff assist students in choosing post-secondary training or work, finding apprenticeships, completing applications and scheduling visits. Many post-secondary representatives from career and technical schools, community colleges, four-year colleges and universities, as well as representatives from the armed forces, visit WHS to discuss opportunities they can provide students. In addition, guidance staff will schedule group visits to help students explore post-secondary training options, as well as provide information about job opportunities, job trends and occupational outlooks.
As part of the guidance curriculum, students are exposed to career and aptitude exploration through classroom lessons, assignments, and assessments including the Self-Directed Search, EXPLORE and PLAN assessments, WorkKeys, and ASVAB. Students can also make use of the bridges website, currently funded by the district. Information about ACT and SAT preparation is also available in the guidance office. The ACT assessment is administered and proctored by WHS guidance staff at WHS on the national testing dates. The PSAT is also administered on the national date at the high school.
Scholarships
Students and parents can receive information about scholarships (local, state, national, and Wamego community foundation) and other financial aid, such as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) through scholarships postings and newsletters from the guidance office. Generally these will be presented through the announcements and in English classrooms or SIP presentations. Special informational parent nights will also be scheduled, usually around Open House, parent-teacher conferences, and in January (for the FAFSA).
