Experiences Leadership through Music
Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America chapters from District D attended Fall Leadership at Rock Creek High School on November 2, 2011.
While at the conference, Wamego High School FCCLA members learned about the importance of FCCLA in their schools and communities, as well as leadership skills and development, and what FCCLA offers for every individual. The stage, being “Exploring Leadership” themed, was decorated with items you would find in the safari!
Wamego High attended with 30 members, and 1 guest chaperoned by their advisor, Tammy Biswell. At the conference, Wamego High School chapter was awarded with the Active Chapter award for their participation in district and state activities. At this year’s conference the chapter served morning refreshments to the participants and assisted with directing attendees to the workshops.
Sheltered Reality was the main speaker of the conference this year. The group uses music to motivate and encourage the audience to make positive decisions for themselves and the world they live in. They played the drums to many well known songs, while the audience was allowed to dance and sing along. The Wamego High School FCCLA chapter participated with Shelter Reality, by dancing in the stands and being the most energetic group there. Chapter member, Luke Hannon was invited drum with Shelter Reality while they were performed one of their songs.
FCCLA members also had the opportunity to hear from Martha Hagedorn-Krass, CEO/Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Northeast Kansas. Each chapter presented items or monetary funds to Ms. Hagedorn-Krass for the Topeka facility. The Wamego chapter provided the organization with a check of one hundred dollars along with food pantry items. Breakout workshops were also attended by the members presented by Jordan Deters (FCCLA State Officer), Peer Education- STOP (Students Taking on Prevention) the violence, and Remy Martin (Japanese Exchange).
Ever since the establishment of FCCLA in 1945, personal growth, leadership development, and community involvement have been a few of its focal points. Members of one of the largest Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSO) can experience politics, public speaking, culinary arts, community service, and early childcare development through their schools chapter located in the Family and Consumer Science Department at Wamego High.
